Cultural history definition is - the history of a culture or culture area; specifically: a history treating one or a number of historic world cultures as an integrated unit for purposes of cross comparison with others and for analysis of the forces presumed to be in operation as regards cultural growth, development, fruition, and decay. Fur traders and missionaries were the first and were then followed by permanent settlers traveling over the Oregon Trail. In 1841 the Unites States Exporling Expedition, led by Charles Wilkes, entered the Puget Sound, further documenting Suquamish culture. History & Culture Shape the Story. The History and Culture graduate program specializes in cultural and intellectual history, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary work. Likenesses of Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie are enshrined by a solemn memorial in downtown Duluth, right at the intersection where, in 1920, they were victims of a lynch mob. Falsely accused of rape, the three young African- Americans were dragged from jail, tried on the street in front of 5,000-10,000 people, and then hanged in the chaos that ensued. It was perhaps the worst day in Duluth’s history, but the opening of this memorial in 2003 helps begin the healing of the wounds of our past. German Culture HistoryKarpeles Manuscript Library Museum exhibits historic documents from one of the country's largest private manuscript collections. David Karpeles, a native of Duluth, rotates collections from his collection among 13 museums he owns across America. Upcoming exhibitions include: Invention of the Telegraph (Sept-Dec 2017), Charles Darwin (Jan-April 2018), Great Women (May-Aug), and the Stamp Act (Sept-Dec 2018).
